More Than Just Numbers

I was raised by two parents who, in their own ways, taught me the heart of business, resilience, and faith.

My mother — a parent with the courage of a warrior — taught me prayer, persistence, and the courage to build something from nothing. She sold milk, she sold alcohol, and when she outgrew those seasons, she opened a daycare centre and later student accommodation back in 2005. I watched her study for her Grade 12 while I did my Grade 2 homework beside her. She taught me that education is power, and using it wisely is strength.

My father — a man who never worked a traditional 9-to-5 — taught me that entrepreneurship is also intelligence. With no formal education, he owned a taxi, later moved into agriculture, and still committed himself to learning through workshops and training. From him, I learned that growth is not limited by a classroom.

At the age of eleven, I was already doing the monthly bookkeeping for my mother’s daycare for R300. That sparked my love for numbers, process, structure, and strategy. It planted the seed for the woman I would later become.
